I worked on the cover and interior design for Maria Tippett’s book, Portrait in Light and Shadow: The Life of Yousuf Karsh. The goal was to insure that the interior reproductions of Karsh’s photographs would be rendered with the same attention to detail as if printed in an art book (even though this was a thoroughly-researched biography, not a monograph).
Working closely with the production team at Anansi, we settled on printing the entire interior using two Pantone inks, a warm grey that would be able to deepen the black ink as well as tone the photographs. This way, the final book would best approximate Karsh’s own printing preferences: he preferred to use a gold toner (rather than the more common silver), which lent a warm glow to all his prints.
If you look carefully at the cover, the word ‘photo’ has been highlighted using letters in the title.
