Heaven is Small

This satirical novel is about a man who works for a Harlequin-like publisher, and gradually discovers that he has arrived in “heaven.” The publisher suggested that we play up the romance-publisher angle, which led to this bodice-ripper image and a faux imprint icon. Because the action is set inside the publishing office (and coffee plays a big part in the protagonist’s understanding of his situation), a stained Post-It seemed an appropriate device for showing the title. I heard from booksellers that people would try to pick off the Post-It to see what was underneath…

When it came time to print a paperback edition, I used the same cover design but placed it on an actual book, which highlighted the meta nature of the visual.
